Lily was not pleased. ‘You keep well out of it,’ she advised. ‘Nothing to do with you.’

‘She is my mother, Lily,’ he said mildly. He had to open the shop again in a quarter of an hour and now he was at the kitchen sink, washing his face and hands in a vain attempt to cool down.

‘It’s entirely their own affair,’ she said. ‘I knew this ’ud happen the minute we saw your father in the pictures. Keep out of it. There’s nothing you can do, anyway.’

‘I gave my word,’ Georgie said miserably.

‘I’ve drawn a tree,’ Johnny said, looking up from the kitchen table where he was covering a large sheet of brown paper with bold colours. ‘What shall I do next, Mummy?’

‘Do that dog we saw in the park,’ Lily said, kindly but vaguely. ‘No. Not that brown. That’s Meg’s.’ She handed brown wax crayons to both her children before they could start a quarrel. ‘This hot weather’s making everybody cantankerous,’ she said, looking back at her husband again. ‘Leave it till it’s a bit cooler, Georgie.’

‘I’ll see if I can find out where he is first,’ Georgie said, slowly patting his face dry. ‘That’s bound to take a bit of time.’ The thought of an excusable delay cheered him up. ‘I won’t rush into anything,’ he promised.

But his father removed the excuse on Monday morning by sending a printed card to all his employees giving his new address and telephone number, and the terse information that this was where he could be contacted, if necessary. And of course, it was necessary. His mother had seen to that.

‘I’ll go next Sunday,’ he said to Lily, handing her the card to read. ‘Get it over with.’ He was weary with foreboding.
